Frame[o]ut geht vom 18. Juli bis zum 06. September in die Sommeredition 2025, in Koproduktion und Kooperation mit dem MuseumsQuartier Wien. Die aktuelle Spielsaison steht unter dem Motto UNGEHORSAM.

Die zeitliche Einordnung von BUSHMAN manifestiert sich entlang brutaler politischer Konflikte. Das Attentat auf Martin Luther King und die darauffolgenden Proteste in den USA ereignen sich 1968 zeitgleich zum Bürgerkrieg in Nigeria. In diesem Jahr kommt Gabriel (Paul Okpokam) aus Nigeria nach San Francisco. Ihm folgend, entlarvt die filmische Erzählung, wie Begegnungen mit Konservativen wie Linken von rassistischen Projektionen durchwirkt sind.
Bis BUSHMAN schließlich von der gewaltvollen Wirklichkeit überholt und vom Spielfilm zur Dokumentation wird: Während das ursprüngliche Drehbuch die Civil-Rights Proteste am San Francisco State College und die damit einhergehende Polizeigewalt nur als Randerscheinung thematisierte, schoben sie sich schließlich als Realität in den Verlauf der erzählten Geschichte. So macht sich in BUSHMAN diese Realität bemerkbar, überholt die Fiktion und erzählt von alles umfassender Repression und jenen, die sich durch Protest, Streik und Film dagegen auflehnen.
Seit seinen ersten Vorführungen im Jahr 1971 vernachlässigt, wurde Bushman 2023 restauriert. Die aktuelle Restaurierung des Pacific Film Archives wurde 2023 beim Il Cinema Ritrovato prämiert.

The chronology of BUSHMAN is manifested along brutal political conflicts. The assassination of Martin Luther King and the subsequent protests in the USA occurred in 1968, concurrent with the civil war in Nigeria. This year, Gabriel (Paul Okpokam) arrives in San Francisco from Nigeria. Following him, the film's narrative exposes how encounters with conservatives and leftists are permeated by racist projections.
Until BUSHMAN is finally overtaken by violent reality and transforms from a fictional film into a documentary: While the original screenplay only addressed the civil rights protests at San Francisco State College and the accompanying police violence as a marginal phenomenon, they eventually intruded into the narrative as reality. Thus, in BUSHMAN, this reality makes itself felt, overtaking fiction and telling of all-encompassing repression and those who rebel against it through protest, strikes, and film.
Neglected since its first screenings in 1971, Bushman was restored in 2023. The current restoration by the Pacific Film Archives won an award at Il Cinema Ritrovato in 2023.
