Ramya, 16, will vor allem eins: leben und lieben – und zwar so richtig. Doch was sich ganz einfach anhört, ist in Wirklichkeit ein ziemlich wilder und unbequemer Ritt durch Chatfenster, College-Flure und gesellschaftliche Erwartungshaltungen an Frauen in Südindien. Bad Girl, der Debütfilm der tamilischen Regisseurin Varsha Bharath, begleitet seine Heldin von der Schulzeit bis ins Erwachsenenleben – mit hohem Tempo, viel Humor und dem nötigen Chaos im Kopf. Letzteres überträgt sich auch auf die filmische Form, die genau wie die Protagonistin im steten Wandel ist. Was als quirlig-romantischer Coming-of-Age-Film beginnt, entpuppt sich bald als energiegeladene, subversive Komödie über das Aufbegehren gegen gesellschaftliche Normen und als Plädoyer für alternative Lebensentwürfe. Bad Girl feiert das Unperfekte, das Laute, das Unentschlossene. Ein nie geradlinig verlaufender Film über das Erwachsenwerden, das ja auch nie glatt verläuft. Ein Trip durch das Innenleben einer jungen Frau, die sich nicht länger sagen lassen will, wie ein „gutes“ Mädchen zu sein hat. Und die Katzen liebt.

Ramya, 16, wants one thing above all else: to live and love – and to the fullest. But what sounds quite simple is in reality a rather wild and uncomfortable ride through chat windows, college hallways, and societal expectations of women in South India. Bad Girl, the debut film by Tamil director Varsha Bharath, follows its heroine from school days into adulthood – with a fast pace, plenty of humor, and the necessary mental chaos. The latter also carries over into the cinematic form, which, like the protagonist, is in constant flux. What begins as a lively, romantic coming-of-age film soon reveals itself as an energetic, subversive comedy about rebelling against social norms and a plea for alternative lifestyles. Bad Girl celebrates the imperfect, the loud, the indecisive. A never straightforward film about growing up, which, after all, never runs smoothly either. A journey through the inner life of a young woman who no longer wants to be told how to be a "good" girl. And who loves cats.
