September Presentation: The 1896 City National Bank Robbery

This month’s presentation shines a light on one of Wichita Falls’ most infamous chapters - the 1896 City National Bank robbery and the notorious hanging that followed. It’s a tale filled with premonitions, Texas Rangers, outlaws, a determined posse, unexpected comedy, and a cast of unlikely heroes.
Though Wichita Falls wasn’t quite the Wild West, it wasn’t far removed either. When the townspeople took matters into their own hands, newspapers across Texas condemned their swift justice. But the citizens of North Texas stood firm -unapologetic and defiant - turning the criticism right back on the state.
Join Special Guest Presenter, Mr. John Yates of the Wichita County Historical Commission, as we revisit this larger-than-life story of crime, community, and frontier justice. Discover the characters and the very locations that shaped an event remembered for generations as a defining moment in Wichita Falls history.
