Little Forests Durham-Mini Forest Site Prep @ Heber Down Conservation Area
Little Forests Durham is pleased to announce a new and exciting partnership with CLOCA and the Town of Whitby to plant a Miyawaki Mini-Forest in Whitby!
Description: Join us for a fun day of site preparation at the Heber Down Conservation Area! Help get the mini-forest site ready by clearing out debris and making the area ready for planting. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and make a positive impact on the environment. No experience necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to get your hands dirty!
Date: Saturday, August 9, 2025
Location: 5000 Cochrane St, Whitby, ON
Time: 9 am
What will we be doing:
We'll be laying down wetted cardboard, compost, and mulch to prepare the 10 x 20 metres site for the eventual planting of 600 trees and shrubs later in the fall. These materials will be left to settle over the next few months for the grass and weeds die back and to allow the cardboard, compost, and mulch to decompose, creating a nutrient-rich site for the tree planting event in October/November.
What is a Mini Forest?
A mini-forest is a densely planted community of native trees and plants in an area typically the size of a tennis court. Mini forests tend to grow faster, sequester more carbon, and promote more biodiversity than conventionally planted urban trees. Learn more at www.littleforestsdurham.ca
No experience necessary and all ages are welcome!
Note: This is a physical activity that may require lifting materials up to 10kg - please be aware of your limitations.
What to wear and bring:
Shovels and light refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you'd like.
