🌟 The Greensand Way 2025 🌟
Overview:
The Greensand Way is a scenic 108-mile (174 km) long-distance trail stretching from Haslemere in Surrey to Hamstreet in Kent, following the Greensand Ridge. We will enjoy panoramic views, explore picturesque villages, and pass through historic sites such as Knole Park and Leeds Castle. The route includes several areas of outstanding natural beauty and seven trig points to bag along the way.
With varied landscapes, from ancient woodlands, rolling hills, open fields, villages and riversides , it’s a great mini challenge to try and complete over the course of 2025.
You will experience the beauty of Surrey and Kent across different seasons as we complete the trail with 1 date per month.
The Greensand Way is named after the Greensand Ridge, a long, narrow band of sandstone that runs through parts of Surrey and Kent. This sandstone is rich in the mineral glauconite, which gives it a distinctive greenish hue, hence the name “Greensand.”
There is an alternative option to complete the trail and receive a medal. This will give you two free walks.
Route Details:
Stage 9:
Starting in Yalding, the Greensand Way immediately immerses us in the serene countryside of the Medway Valley.
As we continue, we’ll pass through a mixture of open farmland and woodlands, with occasional glimpses of the River Beult, a tributary of the Medway. From here you’ll notice a shift in the landscape as the hills of the Greensand Ridge begin to rise. In September, the hedgerows are often bursting with blackberries, and the fields are rich with the last of the summer’s harvest.
The route follows a series of quiet country lanes and footpaths, leading you through more orchards and across gently sloping hills. We’ll begin to ascend onto the ridge, with expanding views over the Weald of Kent.
As we approach East Sutton, the historic East Sutton Park, a beautiful Elizabethan manor house, can be glimpsed through the trees. The trail then continues through the rolling countryside, where you’ll see vineyards as we near Sutton Valence.
The final stretch brings us to Sutton Valence, a hilltop village with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside which is where we will end stage 9 of The Greensand Way.
