Botanica 2025 - ‘Fruiting Bodies’ Exhibition…
by Botanical Art Interest Group Mackay (BAIG)
Available for viewing from Wednesday October 8 to Sunday November 9 at the Lagoons Gallery within the Botanic Gardens Café. Opening hours are Wednesday to Friday 9am – 2pm and Weekends 8am – 3pm.
Botanica 2025 - ‘Fruiting Bodies’ Exhibition aims to highlight ‘Flowers’ which contain the reproductive parts of a plant, and the developing or mature result of pollination and fertilisation, being the ‘Fruits’, ‘Seed capsules’ or the ‘Seeds’ themselves. These parts of a plant serve to propagate the species.
‘Fruiting Bodies’ is also a term given to fungal structures, (like a mushroom), that grow and spread spores to colonise and grow elsewhere. They appear in many sizes, shapes, and colours, often raising above the unseen threads of the fungus growing underground or within wood.
Botanical art combines detail, accuracy and artistry, with many hours needed for each graphite drawing, pastel, watercolour or acrylic painting. Showcases display how artists take live specimens and create a “living” piece of botanical art via their sketchbooks, photos, real specimens and art materials.
‘Meet the Artists’ on Opening Day: Wednesday October 8 from 11am – 1pm.
A ‘Fruiting Bodies’ Guided Walk - Initially viewing artworks and later exploring other ‘fruiting’ plants growing in the Botanic Gardens - Friday October 24 - 10am with Maya. Meet at the Administration building.
Botanical Art Interest Group (BAIG) meet twice a month at the MRBG meeting room - Every second Monday and every fourth Wednesday. Enquiries contact Maya Harrison - 0436331009.
