PURPOSE
A clinical instructor is an experienced practitioner who provides supervision during clinical practice and facilitates the application of theory to practice for students and staff learners. They assist the learner by setting clear expectations, providing effective feedback on their performance, and offering appropriate opportunities to meet their learning objectives.
Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences supports healthcare providers who actively participate in our students' education by offering excellent clinical training opportunities. Clinical instructors transmit skills and serve as mentors who convey the core values important to Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences: accountability, collaboration, honesty, inclusiveness, and wellness.
Clinical instructors do what no textbook or classroom can accomplish. As a result, the students benefit from the community-based experience. In contrast, preceptors benefit from integrating new ideas and techniques into their practices, which are currently taught in academic health sciences institutions.
DESCRIPTION
This discussion provides an overview by experienced preceptors in a rural community. Providers share the various opportunities available for working in a rural setting and the interprofessional experiences each student can expect. Learn the challenges and benefits of rural healthcare.

SPEAKERS
Michael Luft, DO
A graduate of Grandview College with a BA in General Science, Dr. Luft completed his medical school training at the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, IA. He completed his residency at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Dr. Luft has been working in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine for over 20 years. He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
David Wright, DO, FACOS, FACS
Dr. Wright is a graduate of the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences and the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, IA. He completed his residency in General Surgery at Mount Clemens General Hospital, in association with Michigan State University, at Mount Clemens, MI. A Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, Dr. Wright is also Board Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. Dr. Wright’s practice encompasses various types of general surgery, including procedures on the abdomen, such as the small bowel, colon, gallbladder, appendix, and endoscopy.
