About the event

Native Pollinator Garden Planting at Ferrini Ranch
Join Big Sur Land Trust and Regenerative CA to plant a half-acre native pollinator garden at Ferrini Ranch.

About this Event

Come volunteer with Big Sur Land Trust (BSLT) and Regenerative CA to help enhance habitat for wildlife at Ferrini Ranch. Volunteers will help plant a suite of native pollinator plants within a 0.5-acre area and install irrigation. Volunteers will learn about Regenerative California's wildlife-friendly farming practices and will learn about the ecology of the area from BSLT Restoration Ecologist Nicole Chrislock.

More about Ferrini Ranch:

Ferrini Ranch is situated along State Scenic Highway 68, a diverse and scenic corridor which connects the Monterey Peninsula to the Salinas Valley. The Highway 68 corridor is home to many plants and animals and features a mosaic of oak woodland and oak savanna, chaparral, coastal scrub, grassland, and riparian woodland. It supports rich bird diversity and animals such as mountain lion, black-tailed deer, red fox, bobcat, California badger (CA species of special concern), and Monterey dusky-footed woodrat have been documented during wildlife camera trapping along the highway corridor. Ferrini Ranch represents a key habitat linkage and wildlife corridor between both Fort Ord National Monument and Toro County Park.

Regenerative California manages a 68-acre flagship regenerative agriculture farm on the Ferrini Ranch agricultural area. This farm, recently named Regenerative 68! Farm, will train the next generation of regenerative agriculture farmers, create a regional supply chain for hospitality and educational institutions, and demonstrate how regenerative agriculture can help solve food waste, grow careers, improve nutrition and drive the market. Regenerative California strives to use regenerative agriculture to not only produce food, but also to improve wildlife habitat.

What to expect:

  • Expect a half-day on the land, under likely changing weather conditions (fog to sun).
  • Volunteers will be planting a variety of native plants into the ground, and assisting with the installation of irrigation line.
  • Light digging and light lifting will be involved.
  • Meet at 9am at 'The Patch' on River Road, to be directed to parking.

What to bring/wear:

  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Gloves (if you have a pair to bring)
  • Durable pants and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Hat
  • Sturdy closed-toe footwear
  • Bug (tick) repellant
