The West Salem Police Department is in the process of raising funds to add a K-9 to our department. The village has approved a K-9; however, like many K-9 programs, ours will need to be independently funded, meaning no funds for the K-9 program can come out of the current budget for the department. A K-9 would be an extremely beneficial asset to our community to help combat the growing drug problem in our region. Unfortunately, all good things come at a cost. The initial cost for the K-9, fully equipped squad car, all associated equipment, and training is conservatively $125,000. Additionally, the annual maintenance costs are expected to be around $5,000 to include food, veterinary care, continued training, vehicle maintenance, and other miscellaneous expenses.
