Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society welcomes singers from Somerset and beyond to join a day of singing Matthew Coleridge's Requiem
Once a year Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society welcomes singers from Somerset and beyond to a Come & Sing day. It is a wonderful opportunity to join us for a day rehearsing and performing in the beautiful setting of Wells Cathedral, often with a guest conductor or vocal coach. This year we will be led by Matthew Coleridge in a day of rehearsals, culminating in an informal performance of his Requiem. Coleridge’s Requiem has become one of the UK’s most popular new choral works and was one of the highest new entries in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2023. In 2024 it climbed even higher to number 47.Described by the late Sir Neville Marriner as ‘a valuable addition to 21st century choral repertoire’, this deeply moving work and its beautiful, flowing melodies have made it a firm favourite with singers and audiences alike.
The composer will lead the day as part of his 2025 ‘Requiem in a Day’ series at a number of prestigious venues around the country. We will be accompanied by WCOS Director of Music, Timothy Parsons, and be joined by other professional musicians for an informal performance at the end of the day.
