What is Samhain?
In ancient Ireland, Samhain marked the end of summer — the midpoint between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. A fire festival that evolved into All Hallows’ Eve or Halloween, to pagans it is a time for remembering ancestors and loved ones who have passed. In Aotearoa, it echoes the spirit of remembrance we hold during Anzac Day — and the souls travelling with the setting of the stars of Matariki.
Samhain is also known as the Witches’ New Year — a time to reflect, release, and set new intentions for the colder months and the spring to come.
You're warmly invited to join us in ritual.
Please bring a koha if you're able — this could be food, money, candles, or offerings for the altar. If that’s not possible, just bring yourself. Everyone is welcome, and no one will be turned away.
We will gather to:
Cast the Circle – Opening sacred space together, acknowledging the directions and the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, and grounding in the cultural and seasonal meaning of this time.
Remember – Taking a moment of stillness and silence to honour those who have passed, and what we’ve let go of this year.
Let Go – Offering something into the fire to represent what we no longer need to carry into winter. Just as the land sheds its leaves, we, too, can release the old.
Set Intentions – Calling in blessings for the new cycle ahead, planting seeds for growth in the darkness of winter.
Share Kai – We’ll finish with a potluck feast. A big pot of soup and roast potatoes will be provided. If you can bring something, please do — but again, you are welcome either way.
As this is a ritual gathering, please arrive by 6pm to take part in the full experience.
If you’d like to help with planning or decorating the space, let us know.
