The Reason for Christ’s Coming — Prophet, Priest & King

In the Old Testament, God established three offices for the good of His people: prophets, priests, and kings. Prophets proclaimed God’s Word, priests offered sacrifice and atonement, and kings ruled for the people’s protection and peace. Yet Scripture shows that many prophets spoke falsely, priests became corrupt, and most kings ruled for their own glory. Even the faithful ones were often rejected.

So who would teach God’s truth perfectly? Who would provide the atonement we need? Who would rule His people in righteousness?
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to fulfill all three: our perfect Prophet, our final Priest, and our eternal King. Jesus speaks God’s Word faithfully, offers Himself as the once-for-all sacrifice for sin, and rules His kingdom in justice and truth forever.

Join us this Advent as we reflect on Christ’s three-fold office—His teaching and miracles as Prophet; His atoning death and ongoing intercession as Priest; and His gracious rule over all things as King. May God use this study to prepare our hearts for Christmas.
