David Broad - Meanwood Valley Stompers

David Broad’s music is deeply rooted in the traditions of American folk and blues. His guitar style draws from the intricate rags of Blind Blake and Reverend Gary Davis, through to the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson and Charley Patton. He is also an accomplished harmonica player, steeped in the country blues traditions of Sonny Boy Williamson I and Sonny Terry.
His involvement with the Lindy Hop scene led him into early jazz and swing, though the standards he plays still carry a rural, rootsy quality. His reworkings of traditional songs breathe new life into familiar standards, while his original material nods to the songwriting craft of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt.
With the Meanwood Valley Stompers, David brings the spirit of early American music to life. The band blends swing, blues, gospel, ragtime and touches of country, and have played everywhere from pubs and clubs to weddings and even funerals and will be appearing at the Blackstairs Blues Festival in September. Influenced by legends like Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Blind Blake and Robert Johnson, the Stompers feature seasoned musicians who have also played with TC and the Swing Cats, Hailbails, The Lodger and the Lovesick Cowboys.
