is the true story of identical twins, one Chinese and one American, who were separated by the brutal enforcement of China's one-child policy. The book grew out of a decade of reporting in rural China about children who were confiscated by family planning officials to supply the lucrative adoption market. Demick discovered the story and single-handedly reunited the twins in 2019.
Demick, a former Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, is also the author of Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea (2010) and Eat the Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town. (2020). She has been a finalist for the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize among other honors.
