About the event

Eyes on Reading: The Science of Teaching Reading Comprehension with James Kim
In a world that demands critical thinking, informed citizenship, and lifelong learning, the ability to read and understand complex texts is more essential than ever.

Join us for a timely and significant conversation with Dr. James Kim, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and one of the nation’s leading researchers in language and literacy. A key contributor to the landmark Reading for Understanding initiative — a major federal effort to improve how reading comprehension is taught in schools — Dr. Kim brings decades of insight into what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to helping students become strong readers.

In this presentation, Dr. Kim will explore:
* Why so many students struggle to make sense of science, history, and other content-rich texts.
* What the latest research tells us about the importance of vocabulary and background knowledge.
* How to promote lasting improvements in reading comprehension from elementary to middle school.

Whether you’re a teacher, parent, policymaker, or simply someone who cares about the future of education, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss. The science of reading is evolving — come learn where it’s headed next.

9:00 – 9:45 a.m. — Pastry reception (Welcome Lobby)
10:00 – 11:30 a.m. — Discussion and Q&A (Friedman Family Auditorium)

This program is part of the Journalist-in-Residence Program, presented with support from the Ibis Group, and a featured event in the Eyes on Reading series.
