Next time we're featuring one of our very own, Gerry Markman. Gerry is the unassuming but incredibly talented guitarist in our Freakin at the Beacon Band. Listen closely. Gerry makes it look easy, but his playing is intricate and nuanced. Often putting his own twist on a riff, he quietly mixes genres in the most clever and interesting ways. We are very, very lucky to have him!
Gerry began his long career in Montreal playing folk music in the early 60’s, picking up banjo and mandolin along the way. When the 60s morphed into the 70’s, he adapted to the folk music influenced hard rock of the era, and recorded The Flying Dutchman and Run Run with The Max Band. By the mid 70s, Gerry was recording and performing with Tapestry, a Canadian country/pop group. He moved to Ontario in ’77 to co-found Steve’s Music in Toronto. By the 80’s, he was immersed in the Toronto scene playing with The Cameo Blues Band, The Lincolns, Pamela Cannon, Hock Walsh and Alannah Myles, and at the same time, began playing with Malcolm Tomlinson - an association that lasted more than 25 years and resulted in some of the finest R&B you ever did hear, on any bandstand, anywhere. After moving to Barrie with his young family, Gerry fronted the renowned Ruanne’s House Band every week, and, for more than 20 years, he led Orillia’s The Sensations, on guitar and lead vocals. He also began to perform solo engagements in the early 90s, including at The Side Door in Barrie, where, 30 years later, you can still catch him every now and then. He has played in local theatre pit bands for stage shows, including
Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You.
Folk music, pop, rock, country, and a lifelong jazz and blues influence are all heard at every Gerry Markman gig, performed with his unique style, great dynamics and impeccable tone.
Don't miss it! $10 music appreciation at the door. Reservations recommended.
