Rowena Federico Finn is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose work centers her experiences as a Filipina-American female, teacher, and mother. Born and raised in Hampton Roads, Rowena uses indigenous materials from the Philippines to connect with her heritage and explore how it weaves into her American upbringing. Her work examines the universal concepts of belonging and rejection, and how they affect identity and authenticity. Rowena is the recipient of the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, a creative residency at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts, and was an Artist in Residence at the Virginia MOCA in 2024. She taught at the Governor’s School for the Arts, the Chrysler Museum, Virginia MOCA, the Barrier Islands Center, the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, and other arts organizations throughout the region. Rowena believes public service is integral to her artistic process, and has served in the past as vice chair of the Virginia Asian Advisory Board, president of the Chesapeake Bay Watercolorists, a member of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Access Committee for the Virginia Art Education Association, a member of the Virginia Beach City Public School’s Equity Council, and a contributing writer for the Portrait Society of America. She currently serves as vice chair of WHRO’s Community Advisory Board and is co-founder of the Virginia Coalition of Visual Artists. Her work and advocacy have garnered her a multitude of published and televised interviews, and she is featured on the current season of PBS’s 757 Curate.
