The Moon Viewing Festival
Tsukimi (月見), meaning “moon viewing,”
is a traditional Japanese Buddhist
festival celebrating the beauty of the
harvest moon. Rabbits are associated
with this festival because the Japanese
see a rabbit pounding rice cakes when
they look at the shapes in the moon.
It is observed on the 15th day of the 8th
month of the lunar calendar (Jūgoya
十五夜), which usually falls in September
or October on the Western calendar.
Friends and family gather to burn
incense, enjoy tsukimi dango (special rice
cakes), and admire the full moon.
Pampas grass (susuki) is often displayed
as decoration, and seasonal fruits and
vegetables are offered to the moon as a
gesture of gratitude and hope for a
bountiful harvest.
