SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION: Homo Plasticus - Plastic Inside Us
Micro and nanoplastics are everywhere. Scientists are only beginning to uncover the extent to which they are in human bodies, with researchers finding micro and nanoplastics lodged in our vital organs: liver, lungs, intestines, placenta... The list goes on and on. To what extent is this harmful? Are Homo sapiens becoming Homo Plasticus?
Plastic is an elusive enemy: it disguises itself; it hides, it makes itself tiny, right down to the micro or even nano scale. Between in vitro and in vivo studies, and the development of research on human populations, scientists are exploring new leads to understand the effects of micro-plastics on our health. Disruption of the microbiota, saturation of the immune system, inflammation of the lungs and intestines, DNA damage and a risk factor for cancer - the scenario unfolding before the eyes of researchers points to a major public health issue. This unprecedented investigation takes us all over Europe to better understand how plastics colonize our bodies and how they could alter them.
Ahead of the INC5.2 Plastics Negotiations, taking place in Geneva from 5 - 14 August, join us for a thought-provoking screening of "Homo Plasticus - Plastic Inside Us" at Pathé Balexert. Explore the impact of plastic on our environment and health in this eye-opening documentary. Discover the hidden truths behind plastic consumption and its effects on our daily lives.
Following the documentary, a panel of experts will discuss the implications of plastic pollution and the role a Global Plastics Treaty can take to mitigate future health impacts.
