Shibori Stitch Indigo Dye Workshop

In this workshop, we will explore Shibori stitching techniques in combination with Indigo dyeing. Students will learn the basics of using thread to sew and bind fabric, creating various patterns and textures. This ancient Japanese stitching technique was traditionally used to decorate and embellish garments, particularly for the Japanese aristocracy and samurai class. Over time, it spread in use to everyday clothing and textiles. The process involves sewing and gathering the fabric to form resist areas where the dye cannot penetrate, resulting in beautiful, intricate patterns.

The morning session will focus on the sewing and binding process, while the afternoon will be dedicated to dyeing the pieces in the Indigo dye vats.

Some small fabric will be provided for creating samples. Participants are also invited to bring their own pre-washed cotton for dyeing.

To ensure sufficient space in the dye vat for everyone, please refrain from bringing large & bulky items. Prepare to gain a foundational understanding of the shibori process and craft exquisite hand-dyed pieces to cherish.

Under Naomi’s guidance, anticipate an event brimming with alchemy, experimentation, and joyful creativity.

Timing

Morning session 10:30 am-12:30

Lunch break 12:30-1:15 pm (Lunch NOT provided however there are options nearby including Bento boxes at Fuijya grocery store)

Afternoon indigo dyeing 1:15-3:30pm

Materials to Bring

Pre-washed cotton materials for dyeing. Ensure all items undergo pre-washing with a gentle detergent to remove any chemicals that may interfere with the dyeing process. Dress in workshop-ready attire, and if available, bring an apron to protect your clothing.
