Power of Hand Sketching: Facade Detailing for Architects

This two-day workshop is focused on architectural sketching and facade detail development.The workshop aims to strengthen participants’ ability to analyze and represent architectural details through both observation and creative interpretation without the use of digital tools.

On May 3rd, participants will engage in on-site freehand sketching at the preselected location—the iconic Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC. Guided by instructor Shinobu Homma—former Technical Principal at Revery Architecture—who played a key role in the building’s design and construction, participants will observe and sketch façade details using provided drawing tools. They will then compare their sketches with the original design documents to gain deeper insights into the building’s design evolution and construction process.

On May 10th, the workshop continues at Abaton Projects with a studio-based session where participants will refine and reinterpret their initial sketches through an iterative, design-driven process. Using hand drafting tools, they will develop façade details with a focus on precision and intent. The instructor will guide participants through detail development techniques, emphasizing how advancements in façade materials, envelope performance, and modern construction methods influence contemporary architectural detailing.

This workshop is ideal for Intern Architects and emerging professionals looking to refine their sketching and detailing skills. A basic knowledge of architectural detailing is mandatory. All drawing tools will be provided. Limited spots available–don't miss it!

Learning Objectives*:

• Develop observational skills by evaluating and assessing facade components and assemblies through hand sketching on site.
• Understand how details evolve from design to construction by evaluating a built facade detail component.
• Learn about facade construction sequencing by analyzing and reverse engineering a built building facade component.
• Strengthen critical thinking by evaluating, refining, and improving construction details for better constructability and performance.
• Apply iterative design methods to redesign a built façade component, considering current material technologies and increased envelope performance requirements.

*Note: for participants registered with the AIBC, this workshop can be self-reported for continuing education learning units.

Day 2 - May 10, 2025 at 9:00 am PST: Meet at Abaton Projects, 1598 Bay St, North Vancouver, BC V7J 1A1. Optional transportation for Day 2 provided—to be coordinated on site on Day 1.
