About the event

Indigenous BC Human Rights Code Learning Session
Learn about Indigenous human rights in a session for service providers led by BC's Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

About this Event

In this 2-hour interactive learning session, BC's Office of the Human Rights Commissioner hopes to support service providers in building knowledge and skills about human rights laws and the human rights system in so-called B.C., with a focus on human rights protections for Indigenous Peoples and their experiences within the human right system. The learning will focus on human rights protections for Indigenous Peoples on and off reserve, and how to best support clients and community members who may want to seek justice if they feel they’ve experience discrimination.

Learning Session Goals:
  • Learn about the laws that exist to protect human rights in British Columbia, both on and off reserve, including both federal and provincial statutory law
  • Understand the language used in the law, what ‘code grounds’ or parts of people’s identity are protected by the law, and what areas of life are protected
  • Learn about addition of “Indigeneity” as a protected ground and understand how it could be a factor or the personal characteristic of focus in a human rights complaint
  • To be able to identify when the Human Rights Code is being violated, & how discrimination is determined under the Code using real life cases
  • Build knowledge about the human rights system in British Columbia, and understand how to file a human rights complaint with the BC Human Rights Tribunal and where to get legal support in order to best support community members and clients
  • To better understand service provider responsibilities under the law to hold up, protect human rights and not discriminate under the Code as ‘duty bearers’ with responsibilities under the law
