Claire Stover, Outreach Coordinator for the California Raptor Center, introduces people of all ages to raptors and their habitats to encourage appreciation, respect, and protection of these magnificent birds. When a bird of prey is sick, injured, or lacking the ability to survive in the wild, it can often mean the end of its life, or, after receiving the best of care, some birds still cannot be released. The California Raptor Center (CRC) provides a home for non-releasable birds and uses them as educators. Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Great Horned Owls, and American Kestrels can almost always be found in their enclosures. Their museum and permanent collection of living raptors, located at 1340 Equine Lane, Davis, is open to the public on weekdays from 9-4 and Saturdays from 9-12. Claire will share taxidermy materials, falconry gear, "find the owl" photos, skulls, and talons from the CRC.
Aaron N. K. Haiman is the author of "Birds of the California Delta," a guide to the avian diversity in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region, which includes areas like Rush Ranch and the Suisun Marsh. Aaron is a Senior Environmental Scientist working for a California State Agency, the Wildlife Conservation Board. Meet Aaron, a lifelong birder from 5 years of age, who began volunteering at the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory as a youngster! He later went on to earn a BS in Environmental Science from UC Berkeley as well as MS degrees in Avian Science and Animal Behavior from UC Davis.
Bring a camera and binoculars and admire the wildlife that is often spotted in the park. Enjoy the peaceful park setting, hike to the pioneer graves or take advantage of the picnic tables. Bring a picnic and listen to the music of the Vacaville Jammers as they “sing like the birds”!
