First Fires Youth Camp I: Ancestral Arts, Paddling & Ancient Technologies Experience
A Hands-On Cultural Experience
Step back in time and reconnect with traditional skills through our immersive Ancestral Arts youth program. Participants will spend the day exploring time-honored techniques used by people across the world for thousands of years while also experiencing the natural beauty of the Cache River by canoe or kayak.
Long before modern technology, people relied on creativity, observation, and deep connections to the land and water to meet their daily needs. These skills—once common knowledge for nearly every culture—helped people make tools, create art, travel waterways, and understand the landscapes around them. Our program brings these traditions back to life through hands-on learning and outdoor exploration.
Throughout the day, participants will rotate through a series of engaging activities that introduce a variety of ancestral skills. Youth will have the opportunity to work with river wild clay pottery, experiment with natural fibers, learn about to craft and create their own atlal ( spear thrower) and bamboo dart and learn friction fire. Participants will also explore other simple technologies used by early people to shape tools, create useful objects, and express creativity.
In addition to the arts and technologies, campers will take part in a guided paddle on the Cache River Wetlands, where they will learn about the importance of waterways to early cultures as travel routes, food sources, and places of gathering. Along the way, instructors will point out wildlife, discuss the natural history of the river, and highlight how people have interacted with these landscapes for generations.
This program emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity, teamwork, and connection to nature. By experiencing these traditional skills firsthand, participants gain a greater appreciation for the ingenuity of past cultures and a deeper understanding of how people once lived closely with the natural world.
