Due to the impact of industrialization, the Western world treats musical instruments simply as tools for performers or composers to convey their musical ideas or expressions. They have long forgotten ‘the man behind the gun,’ who spent hundreds of years creating musical instruments through contemplative and meditative processes, until they took shape as what we see today.
In the Asia-Pacific and African regions, many musical instruments are still regarded as sacred objects. This perspective signifies the contemplative and sacred process by which our ancestors created musical instruments that evolved over hundreds of years into their current shape and construction. For that reason, I believe musical instruments are not merely tools for performers or composers to express their musical ideas, but a medium that has become the message in itself.
The musical instruments in Asia-Pacific and Africa are primarily repositories of cosmic energy that have been absorbed by our ancestors, who created them through spiritual contemplation and ritual. Therefore, the primary task of composers and performers in the Asia-Pacific and Africa regions is to reclaim this energy and convey it to the people who listen to the music.
This is what happens every time one listens to the music of the Indonesian National Orchestra (INO) here and abroad. Hence, the music we play is not merely the music I compose, but also a sonic medium that delivers the cosmic energy absorbed by our ancestors when they created the instruments that formed the Indonesian National Orchestra.
This talk will present documentary videos of audience’s responses to INO during our concert tours in Europe from 2022 to 2025.
