Beyond Hierarchy: The Caste System in Bali with Jean Couteau
📅 Date: Thursday, October 9th
🕖 Time: 7:00 PM
📍 Venue: Usada Bali, Jl. Sugriwa No.4, Ubud, Bali
The Balinese caste system (catur wangsa) differs fundamentally from its Indian counterpart. Rather than being based on purity and social hierarchy, it revolves around ritual roles, temple participation, and communal identity. In this thought-provoking talk, cultural expert and long-time Bali observer Jean Couteau will explore how caste in Bali is evolving — from the emergence of new ritual figures such as empu and rsi, to the subtle disappearance of caste markers in everyday language. Hosted by Usada Bali, this session invites reflection on how Balinese society continues to adapt its spiritual and cultural frameworks in response to modern challenges. Join us for an evening of deep insight into the living dynamics of tradition, identity, and ritual in contemporary Bali.
