Dates: August 1 – 23, 2025 Opening: August 1
Step into the early history of women in STEM with “The Zürich 7”. This exhibition illuminates the extraordinary lives of a group of pioneering women who, in the late 1860s, defied societal norms and the closures of medical schools to women by confining themselves to Zürich to pursue their medical dreams.
Discover the personal and professional journeys of these seven remarkable women, whose narratives—inspirational, poignant, frustrating, and even humorous—have long been hidden in academic tomes. Through a unique blend of paper and canvas art, and with an eye towards innovative digital and virtual enhancements, “The Zürich 7” brings their stories to life in new ways.
Each piece in the collection represents a significant characteristic of one of these trailblazers. Explore “The Template” (#1 of 7), dedicated to Nadezhda Suslova, whose unconventional path to medicine paved the way for countless women. Learn about Marie Vogtlin Heim (#7 of 7) and the surprising “Legally Blonde” moment that intertwines her story with Suslova’s.
Beyond their individual triumphs, the collection also highlights a pivotal cross-disciplinary field trip into the Swiss Alps and Jura Mountains, where these medical students engaged with botany and geology. The majestic mountain ranges, prominently featured throughout the collection, symbolize the parallel “compressional forces” that shaped both the earth and the historical moment that brought these women together.
Join us to experience a collection that celebrates the resilience and brilliance of these forgotten women and the enduring power of scientific exploration.
