The human voice is a powerful tool. Connecting-to and understanding your physical voice is an important vehicle for empowering one's inner-voice! Join vocalist and sound artist Micaela Tobin this summer to discover the power of resonating your alignment. These workshops will cover the foundations of healthy vocal technique through gentle exercises, guided improvisations, and group singing. Participants of the workshops will have the exciting option of singing in a guided vocal performance with Micaela Tobin after the final workshop in August. All experience levels welcome!

ABOUT MICAELA TOBIN

Composer and sound artist Micaela Tobin wields her soprano voice against the confines of convention, specializing in experimental opera. Micaela focuses on building connections between the physical voice and one’s "inner" voice as a means of empowerment, challenging colonial stories and systems. Integrating voice with electronics, ritualized gesture and amplified object-symbolism, she weaves dynamic music that is at once alluring and demanding.

As composer and director, Micaela presented her opera film at REDCAT in 2021, titled BAKUNAWA: Opera of the Seven Moons, an adaptation of the album under her music project, White Boy Scream. Continuing her series celebrating precolonial mythology of the Philippines, Micaela premiered her second opera in 2023, APOLAKI: Opera of the Scorched Earth, at the historic Zorthian Ranch.

Micaela is the recipient of the 2021 MAP Fund, the 2022 NPN Creation & Development Fund, and was most recently awarded the 2024 Civitella Ranieri Fellowship. She is currently based in Tulsa, OK as an awardee of the 2025-2027 Tulsa Artist Fellowship. Micaela has fostered young and new talent as a voice teacher for over a decade. She taught voice on faculty at the California Institute for the Arts from 2018-2024 and through her experimental voice hub, HOWL SPACE, co-founded with Carmina Escobar, since 2020.

ABOUT TULSA ARTIST FELLOWSHIP

Established in 2015, the was created as a place-based initiative by the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) to address pressing challenges faced by contemporary artists and arts workers living in and joining Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa Artist Fellowship believes the arts are critical to advancing cultural citizenship and supports community-invested practitioners who intentionally engage with our city.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tulsa Artist Fellowship - Studios at 109 MLK Jr Blvd E. Tulsa, OK 74103 accommodates wheelchairs and strollers. Variable seating is provided in addition to areas for distanced standing. Family-scale private washrooms are available to support visitors with disabilities and caregivers who need access to increased square footage and changing tables. The elevator at Archer Studios is located at the main west entrance on Martin Luther King Blvd. Street-side parking is available at both buildings using the Park Mobile App and is free after 5 pm and all day Saturday-Sunday.
