JUST LIKE CLAY - Indie-Folk-Pop (UK/US/DE)
"An exciting new act was Just Like Clay, a combination of Good Habits and The Trouble Notes. Four excellent musicians have found a new dynamic, and hopefully, they’ll stay together for a long time." – FATEA RECORDS, UK
Over a year ago, something special took shape in the heart of Totnes. A new band was born at The Barrel House, surrounded by poetry, jam sessions, and the warmth of community spirit.
During a one-week creative residency, two kindred bands — The Trouble Notes (DE/US) and Good Habits (UK)— blossomed into Just Like Clay, a string-infused indie-folk-pop band whose sound is as infectious as it is emotionally raw.
This return gig at The Barrel House won’t just be a concert — it will be a community event. In the spirit of last year’s residency, Just Like Clay will once again collaborate with local poets, musicians, and creatives, inviting them into the performance for a night of shared art and connection. Expect surprises, storytelling, and an open-hearted atmosphere that honours Totnes as the cradle of their creative journey.
“This town gave us our start — not just with space, but with spirit. We’re thrilled to come back not only with new music, but with the same commitment to inclusion and creative community that birthed this band.”
– Bonnie, Cellist & Vocalist, Just Like Clay

Whether you were there from the beginning, or this is your first encounter, Just Like Clay’s return promises to be a moment of reflection, joy, and reconnection. Come for the music — stay for the magic that happens when strings, stories, and souls come together.
Their return on Wednesday 17th September, to the place where it all began, also celebrates the release of their live EP “Bethanie Sessions” — a series of live recordings that came to life in the idyllic farmhouse of our dear friends Ali and Reg situated in the rolling hills of Devon early February 2025. The songs are shaped by the same energy of collaboration, community, and cathartic expression that was born in Totnes.
Led by Bennet and Bonnie with vocals, violin, and cello, these typically classical/folk-inspired instruments find their place in a cathartic and celebratory indie-rock soundscape. Their strings are elevated by Florian’s indie electric guitar soundscapes and driving acoustic guitar rhythms, blending seamlessly with Peter’s fascinating, versatile combination of accordion and percussion—creating a performance as thrilling to watch as it is to hear.
Their set promises a dynamic show where violin, cello, guitar, accordion, and percussion merge into an exciting indie-pop sound. The themes of their music revolve around hope, self-confidence, and community.
"We brought The Trouble Notes back by popular demand, and there was no doubt that collaborating with Good Habits was a brilliant idea. Both their individual sets and their joint performance as Just Like Clay wowed the audience. Between the groups, they can deliver intimate moments or incredibly high-energy experiences, always with undeniable stage presence and a high degree of professionalism. A joy to work with, both on and off stage." – Ellie, Green Gathering, UK
