Introducing Tsotsi, Bringing Cape Jazz to Toronto
Tsotsi is a 6-piece Cape Jazz band playing the music of Cape Town, a port city at Africa’s Southern tip that mirrors New Orleans as a melting pot of musical traditions. Cape Jazz blends indigenous African rhythms with European instrumentation, evolving similarly to American jazz in the early 20th century. Rooted in Cape Malay culture, Cape Jazz accompanied social gatherings, parades, and dances, later becoming a tool of anti-apartheid expression when public performance was banned.
Tony, born and raised in South Africa introduced this music to fellow jazz musicians. The first sheet music collection of Cape Jazz compositions was only published recently. We auditioned musicians, transcribed scores and the group was incubated in Tony’s attic music room. “Tsotsi,” South African slang for a charismatic street thug, reflects the bold energy of the music.
