Inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear and considered to be one of Akira Kurosawa’s greatest achievements, this Academy Award-winning film was the legendary director’s last great epic.

Set in sixteenth-century Japan, the story is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

At the age of seventy, after years of consolidating his empire, the Great Lord Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai) decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other…and him.

With colour-coded troops and a Gustav Mahler–inspired film score by Toru Takemitsu, the battle sequences are magnificent and majestic in scope.
