PRESS RELEASE
Njacko Backo & Kalimbas At Work Celebrate the Release of
Mieux Vaut Tard Que Jamais / Better Late Than Never
Saturday May 31, 2025 at The Redwood Theatre
Cameroon-born artist returns to his roots on this album celebrating youth across Africa who are driving the movement towards greater independence for African nations.
Njacko Backo is thrilled to announce the release of his latest album with his band Kalimbas At Work entitled "Mieux Vaut Tard Que Jamais / Better Late Than Never," with a concert at The Redwood Theatre on Saturday May 31, 2025. As Backo’s 13th independent release, this album marks an important milestone in the musician’s journey that began in a small village in rural Cameroon. The concert will feature opening performances from special guests Nii Osabu, Nyama Bill, and Njacko’s youngest son, Nkoni Backo. DJ Moussa will round out the evening, spinning the latest African hits and classics into the night. The event promises to be an unforgettable evening filled with infectious music, joy, and community. Njacko will be joined by 12 musicians on stage!
On this latest release, Njacko embraced his Cameroonian roots on a new level, collaborating with several other African musicians who understand the nuance of Central African music. Maga Benam is featured prominently on the album, a style of music that Njacko created by fusing the traditions of Mangambeu and Ben Skin. As always, Njacko’s lyrics carry a powerful, yet often humorous message about the importance of respect, love, integrity, community and self-worth. This album reflects his pride in seeing the younger generation across Africa reclaim their sovereignty and challenge the old ways.
Njacko, a Juno-nominated musician and songwriter, is known for his mastery of the Kalimba (African piano), Ngoni (African harp), and ability to blend traditional and modern instruments and sounds. A cultural ambassador who has performed for young people for more than three decades, Njacko loves to engage with his audiences, making them feel part of the music and the community. He counts both Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango as significant influences on his art, creating music that pulls you in and keeps you going with an energy that just won’t quit.
Co-presented by Batuki Music Society the album launch will take place on May 31, 2025 at The Redwood Theatre on the east side of Toronto.
