125 Years of Kurt Weill with Judith Lander & Adi Braun, and Jeff McLeod at the piano. Monday May 26.
JUDITH LANDER is an internationally acclaimed singer, has been a ballet composer, Broadway actress, and cabaret performer.
A young singer on both the English and French CBC networks, she joined the original Canadian cast of "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris". Years of "Brel" productions across Canada and the US would follow, which included an appearance alongside Brel at Carnegie Hall. It was in Boston Judith would meet the legendary Lotte Lenya, and a new compilation of Weill music, "Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill" soon headed to New York. Judith would be in other productions of "Berlin to Broadway" as well as appearing in the role of Jenny Diver in "The Threepenny Opera" at the Cincinnati Playhouse Theater.
Judith would continue performing her music with dance companies across North America and Europe, and returned to Toronto to star in the hit "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road." She returned to New York to join renowned composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz in his production of"The Baker's Wife". Schwartz describes Judith as having "a profound way with a lyric".." a voice so rich, evocative and heartbreaking."
Judith recorded "From My Life": an album of cabaret songs including Weill, Brel, Sondheim, and Schwartz. She continues to sing her favorites.
ADI BRAUN has a long list of cabaret, concert and theatre successes to her credit. She has performed in every major jazz and concert venue in Toronto, has toured Canada, the United States, and Europe. In 2023 Adi released her sixth CD recording “Night and Day - The Cole Porter Songbook” – which follows her previously celebrated recordings “Moderne Frau – Modern Woman” (2017), a tribute to the music of Weimar Cabaret, “Canadian Scenes I” (2010), Live at the Metropolitan Room (2007), The Rules of the Game (2006), and Delishious (2003).
Her sophisticated style and subtle delivery evokes such vocal greats as Sarah Vaughan, Lotte Lenya, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney. Adi’s repertoire ranges from the Great American songbook, to European cabaret, to contemporary songs by Canada legend’s Shirley Eikhard and Gordon Lightfoot as well as her own originals. Whether she is singing in English, French, Spanish or German, Adi Braun is “a power-frau who gives jazz standards a uniquetouch, telling stories that are miniature life moments” (Rheinische Post, Düsseldorf, Germany).
296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
