About the event

Heat Wave: THE LONG, HOT SUMMER (1958) - Presented by Nathalie Atkinson
The films are hot, but the Revue’s AC will be cranked for the films in this summer’s Heat Wave lineup.

Heat Wave at the Revue Cinema, a lineup of the greatest summer movies ever made, continues on July 2nd with the summer cult classic, THE LONG, HOT SUMMER with an introduction by Designing The Movies curator, NATHALIE ATKINSON!

This simmering story of sexual tension and succession in the Deep South is now the stuff of legend, remembered for the famously ‘lusty time’ co-stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward enjoyed on location. While filming the 1958 enemies-to-lovers romance the the Hollywood actors fell hard for one another—and that chemistry is palpable in every frame. They wed shortly after production wrapped and remained married for 50 years until Newman's death in 2008, after making 15 more films together.

Combining several William Faulkner short stories, Martin Ritt (Hud) directs Paul Newman in his prime, who’s never been sexier than as cocky, fast-talking drifter Ben Quick. Quick arrives in drought-condition rural Mississippi dogged by a pyromaniac reputation and his suspicious behaviour also disrupts the delicate balance of the wealthy Varner household, where Woodward is spirited Clara Varner (an ‘old maid’ at 23). Soapy and atmospheric, a sweaty good time is had by all—not least Angela Lansbury as Minnie, savvy mistress to domineering patriarch Will Varner (Orson Welles).

Presented by Designing the Movies host Nathalie Atkinson with an illustrated introduction—which will probably just be photos of Peak Paul Newman, shirtless. (Seriously.)
