About this Event

Our coyote experts will talk about how we can safely coexist with coyotes. Panel discussion followed by a Q&A period.

Panel speakers:

  • Esther Attard - Director, Toronto Animal Services, City of Toronto

Esther Attard graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1991 and began her veterinary career as an equine practitioner in Tennessee. She started working at Toronto Animal Services in 2007 and was appointed to Chief Veterinarian in 2017. In 2019, she was appointed to Director. Her vision extends beyond shelter medicine to preventing the need for animals to be in a shelter and strategies to keep pets with their people. She has championed establishing partnerships with relevant agencies and community stakeholders to promote wildlife coexistence, responsible pet ownership and public safety through education, low cost spay/neuter, wellness, microchipping and rabies clinics.

  • Victoria Badham - Education and Outreach Manager, Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC)

Victoria joined TWC's Wildlife Hotline team in 2011 after completing her undergraduate degree in Environmental Policy and Urban Studies at the University of Toronto. Responding to thousands of hotline calls - from wildlife emergencies to requests for general wildlife information - increased her awareness of the vast issues affecting urban wildlife, as well as commonly held misconceptions about some wild species, and the urgent need for broader public education. She now holds a Master of Education from the University of Toronto and manages TWC's hotline, education and outreach programs. She aims to inspire children, youth and adults alike to respect and connect with nature and the amazing wild species with whom we share our neighbourhoods.

  • Tiziana Gelmi - Spatial Ecologist, University of Toronto

Tiziana is a wildlife biologist analyzing the relationship between the urban landscape, people and wildlife. She has published research using camera traps and GPS-collared coyotes to enhance our knowledge of the life of coyotes in the city of Toronto with the aim of understanding how they move through the city, what they eat in the city, how they are affected health-wise by the city and how people relate to their presence. Her goal is to provide the knowledge needed to formulate management strategies which consider both, the behavior and space use of urban coyotes, and the benefits of having a full wildlife ecosystem in the city.
  • Lesley Sampson - Coyote Watch Canada

Lesley Sampson has dedicated more than two decades to advocating for canids and promoting coexistence between people and wildlife. As the co-founding Executive Director of Coyote Watch Canada, she focuses on canid behaviour, humane conflict resolution, and evidence-based coexistence strategies. Lesley works with communities, governments, and researchers across North America and internationally, supporting policy development, first response training, and community education through collaboration and field-based experience.
