BOOK LAUNCH: Playing Through Pain

Come join us for the book launch of "Playing Through Pain"! Dive into the dark side of sports with author Daniel Sailofsky, who will be joined in conversation by Derek Silva.

For many fans and casual observers, professional sports and violence are deeply connected. Violence on the field has real consequences for players, notably in the form of life-altering injuries from concussions. Off the field, in the last several decades, scores of athletes have committed violent acts, from domestic abuse and sexual assault to animal abuse and M**der. Beyond athletes, sport also serves as a site of political and structural violence, from the displacement and hyperpolicing of everyday people for mega-events to the “sportswashing” of environmentally harmful industries.

Copies of the book will be available for sale, and the author will be signing copies!

Daniel Sailofsky is Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, where he teaches and conducts research at the intersection of critical sociology and sport. He has published over fifteen peer-reviewed articles and chapters on crime, violence, and harm reduction, mostly in the context of sport. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Toronto Star, CBC, CNN, and is a regular guest in the critical sports podcast circuit. This is his first book.

Derek Silva is Professor of Sociology at King’s University College at Western University. His research focuses on sociocultural studies of sport. He is co-author of The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game, as well as co-host of The End of Sport Podcast.
