Big Stories in Little India Community Event

Explore Gerrard India Bazaar at Gerrard Street East also known as “Little India”! Discover how a former industrial brickyard is now a hub for Toronto’s South Asian community on one of our free walking tours. Come by the Heritage Toronto tent at the Leslieville Farmer’s Market between 9:00am and 2:00pm to learn how one of Toronto’s first Bollywood movie theatres transformed this East End neighbourhood to an international destination for South Asian culture during the 1970s and 80s.


A free 1-hour walking tour of the Gerrard India Bazaar will be offered at:

10:30am and 12:30pm.


This tour will be led by Emerging Historian Sarah Takhar. Sarah Takhar (she/her) is an emerging heritage professional based in the GTA. She holds an undergraduate degree in Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh and a master’s degree in Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of St Andrews. Sarah is an experienced international researcher and museum educator who has previously worked with organisations such as the Museum on the Mound the Scottish Maritime Museum and the Aurora Historical Society. Sarah is passionate about investigating heritage through a transnational lens and exploring the cross-cultural connections of history.


Start and End Point of the tour: This tour will start and end at the Heritage Toronto tent at the Leslieville Farmer's Market in Greenwood Park (150 Greenwood Ave)

Length of Tour: Approximately 60 minutes


Distance and Terrain: The tour is approximately 1 kilometer in distance and takes place predominantly on paved city sidewalks and streets. There are some unpaved portions of the route that take place in city parks.
