THE BEGINNING OF OUR SCENE:
Toronto's Lindy Hop scene was the first Canadian Lindy Hop scene of the Lindy Hop revival. It was started by Simon Threlkeld & Margaret Tan in October, 1995, with a large and successful Lindy Hop Weekend at a large dance studio on Spadina Ave, Toronto. There has been a continuous Lindy Hop scene in Toronto ever since.
Margaret & Simon organized a series of weekend workshops from October 1995 to June 1996 with the world's most highly regarded Lindy Hop teachers of that time, including the great Frankie Manning, and Swedish Lindy Hoppers, including members of the Rhythm Hot Shots, generally regarded as the best Lindy Hop performance dancers of that time. Margaret and Simon also started Toronto and Canada's first Lindy Hop group of the revival, Toronto Lindy Hoppers (of which Swing Toronto is the successor group), Canada's first Lindy Hop demo/performance group of the revival (also called Toronto Lindy Hoppers), and Canada's first weekly Lindy Hop classes and regular dances.
Simon & Margaret had a lot of help with with starting the scene in October 1995, including from Gary Dafoe & Ramona Zhang, leading people in the Toronto Swing Dance Society (TSDS), including Mona Paris, Gero, Susie Padro, Michael Wagner and others, Peter Renzland, George Randolph (of The Randolph Academy), Max Nii-Noi and others.
Gary & Ramona started a Lindy Hop school in October 1995 with Margaret & Simon's help. Lisa Jacobs also started teaching Lindy Hop locally, and in the winter of 1996 Chachi returned to Toronto from the US (where he'd learned Lindy Hop), and taught Lindy Hop here or a while, before moving to Stockholm, Sweden to study Lindy Hop and other dancing.
