Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, conservationist, National Geographic Explorer, and regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine. Known for his sense of humor and Midwestern work ethic, Joel focuses on documenting endangered species and landscapes to highlight a world worth saving. He founded the National Geographic Photo Ark, a multi-year project to document every species in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries, inspire education, and support conservation efforts. As he says, "When we save species, we're actually saving ourselves."
Joel has authored books including RARE: Portraits of America's Endangered Species, Photographing Your Family, Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky, The Photo Ark, and Insects. His work has appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, The New York Times, Life, Newsweek, and more. He has been featured on 60 Minutes, the Today Show, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, CBS Sunday Morning, and even General Hospital. Joel has also appeared on Explorer, NBC Nightly News, NPR’s Weekend Edition, and PBS’s RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark series. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his wife, Kathy.
