Join artist and journalist Nathan Kensinger for a walk visiting forgotten waterfronts in Fordham Landing and Inwood, where plans for new residential towers are transforming hidden green landscapes. This walk will consider the past, present and future of a unique stretch of the Harlem River. In the Bronx, the coastline is now mostly hidden behind fences, but was once home to streams, springs, and a wooden footbridge which crossed over the river to Manhattan. The remnants of the old bridge and buried streams are still visible at low tide. In Manhattan, the walk will cross over the historic University Heights Bridge into Inwood, to visit a hidden green cove on the Harlem River, which is surrounded and endangered by new residential towers.
This walk is part of "Walking the Harlem River" - a series of 5 walks designed and led by Nathan Kensinger, who has been documenting New York's waterfront and the Harlem River for 15 years. More of his work can be seen at his website: www.nathankensinger.com This walk is generously supported by a grant from the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program and the Hudson River Foundation.
Please note: This walk is one way, starting in The Bronx near Fordham Manor and University Heights, and ending in upper Manhattan, in Inwood.
