About the event

Woodcraft Training Level 1 & 2
We have designed two creative and comprehensive Woodcraft courses — Level 1 and Level 2 — to help you deliver high-quality, engaging Forest School and Forest Skills sessions with confidence.

Each level has distinct content and outcomes, equipping you with the practical skills, knowledge and understanding needed to safely introduce woodcraft activities to children and young people of all ages and abilities. The focus is on good practice: choosing the right wood, selecting and using tools appropriately, and understanding how to manage risk so outdoor learning is both safe and meaningful.

These skills matter because well-planned woodcraft activities build confidence, problem-solving, resilience and fine motor skills in pupils. When delivered well, they often become some of the most memorable and valued sessions children experience outdoors.

You will leave with a clearer understanding of tools, materials and safe methods, and the confidence to turn woodcraft into a purposeful and enjoyable part of your Forest School provision.

What is included?

This training day covers Level 1 principles in the morning. For those who wish to extend their learning, the afternoon continues into Level 2 practice, allowing you to deepen your skills and broaden the range of activities you can safely deliver.

Drinks and snacks are provided. Please bring any additional food you may need, such as a packed lunch.

Level 1 Woodcraft Training
Price: £125 (VAT included)
Ideal for those working with younger children, from nursery through to the end of Key Stage 2

This course introduces the foundations of woodcraft and tool use, helping you understand how to select the right wood and tools for specific tasks.

You will:

-Explore different types of wood, including their uses, strengths and limitations
-Learn about a range of tools, their purpose and safe, appropriate use
-Explore joining techniques using dowelling rather than nails
-Practise safe tool use by making a range of items

Write a risk assessment for using tools within a school or setting

By the end of the course, you will be able to identify common woods, use the listed tools competently and safely, and understand the balance of risk and benefit when using tools with children, including age and skill appropriateness.

Level 2 Woodcraft Training
Ideal for those working with children and young people in KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4
Price: £190 (VAT included)

This course builds on Level 1 and is designed for those who want to extend their practice, introduce more complex activities and develop confidence using a wider range of tools.

You will:

Deepen your understanding of different woods and their properties

-Learn about tool selection, safe use and tool care
-Explore joining techniques using dowelling rather than nails
-Prepare wood for carving, including introductory spoon carving
-Learn the safe and appropriate use of carving tools and an axe

-A whistle
-Basic carved items, potentially including a spoon

-Learn basic weaving skills and create an item using willow on a wooden weaving stand
-Write a risk assessment for using tools within your setting
