About the event

Beginner Belly Dance Spring Term

Join Kathryn for an introduction to belly dance where art meets well-being.  Over 6 weeks, we will explore dance technique, belly dance vocabulary, and musicality. As we progress, you will build strength and confidence while connecting to the rich cultural roots of this expressive and empowering dance form.

Each week we will build on the previous movements with small stepping stones that will have you feeling confident in your movements. We will have time to revisit and master challenging but fun movements so you can make them your own. This supportive space is the perfect place if you've ever been curious what it might feel like to express yourself through movement. Belly dance is inclusive of all body types (and no, you don’t need to have your belly out, although you're more than welcome!)

When: Starting Thursday 12th March at 7.30pm

Where: Newcastle Community Cinema

Tickets: £55 for the term (£10 for drop-in)

I warmly invite you to step into this supportive and uplifting community with roots across the world.

Class information

What do I wear?

  • Something that you can move freely in - skirt, dress or soft trousers, any kind of top works. I invite you to wear something that you feel joyful in, so we can celebrate in our dancing!

  • Pilates/Yoga/Dance Grip socks or soft dance pumps are ideal - trainers will also work!

  • Hip scarf - this doesn't have to be the typical coin scarf - it can be one that is meaningful to you. Searching Vinted.com for “beaded crochet shawl” or “lace shawl” gives lots of options - they're great quality, don't cost too much, and you can choose what style you like! Be sure to double-check dimensions.

  • If you tend to get cold, I suggest leg warmers.

What do I bring?

  • Hip scarf

  • Water

  • Yourself, just as you are!

What to expect

The class is for complete beginners, so if you have no dance experience, this is perfect for you!

We start with a short warm-up followed by beginner belly dance technique with short movement combinations to review movements, and then a cooling stretch.

Why belly dance?

This rich and ancient art form has many benefits for physical and mental health.

It is a full-body workout that you'll have fun doing - while you learn, low-impact movements will improve your strength, balance, flexibility, and boost cardiovascular health.

Dancing in a community is a great way to bring joy and fun to your evening. Shaking off the stress from our bodies helps our minds to relax.

Simply mastering the movements of belly dance with a teacher will show you that you can! My confidence gained from dance is a helpful tool for all kinds of life situations!

So join me in a new adventure, reclaim your body as a source of empowered expression and I'll see you in class!
