You know the drill- join Sacrilegious Cinema: Menagerie of Madness for some frightful 4th of July festivities with a double feature fit for fear at Hotwax Coffee Shop in Ybor City on Monday, June 30th. Serving up the most quintessential Independence Day scares, we reignite an annual tradition with this dangerous dyad. 🧨🇺🇸🎇
At 8PM, let’s take a trip to the town of Southport, North Carolina- where we meet a group of friends celebrating an end of an era and looking forward to new, exciting chapters before taking a turn for the worst, with an innocent night of partying devolving into a deadly hit and run. A year after evading consequences, an ominous letter is delivered- and the sender knows what they did last summer- and intends to make them pay in blood.
This 90’s whodunnit slasher is a 4th of July must- penned by Kevin Williamson himself and featuring beloved scream queen, and lead of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar- don’t let this classic stand in the shadows of Scream any longer. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997) probes a study of guilt and accountability, plummeting audiences into a cinematic purgatory where the past comes back for penance, analyzing the ever-changing nature of interpersonal relations through trials and tribulations. Loosely based off of a mystery novel by Lois Duncan, and inspired by The Hook urban legend, viewers are in for a treat.🪝🎣 👸🏼
Then, at 10PM, we travel back to the Eve of July 4th in Louisville, Kentucky, following a clan of punk rockers on a night of mischief and debauchery in the graveyard.. but things go south when a toxic gas that brings the dead to life is spilled in the morgue and released into the atmosphere in the form of acid rain, tainting the corpses and reanimating the bodies for a buffet of brains.
Spawned by George A. Romero’s partner from the Night of the Living Dead (1968), John A. Russo helms this comedic 80’s take on zombies, establishing many of the tropes associated with the sub-genre, and features an iconic cemetery dance by veteran scream queen, Linnea Quigley as Trash, in perhaps her most iconic role. Come out to see THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985) in this rebellious rump into 80s schlock, spanning a trilogy of its own after its cult success. 🧟♀️🪦☣️🧪🌧️
These tumultuous tales will make you second guess if the dead really do stay buried. 💀
