Prepare for an afternoon of sizzling saxophone when the Tampa Jazz Club pays tribute to the iconic Sonny Rollins for his 95th birthday. Leading the performance will be recently retired USF Director of Jazz Studies, Jack Wilkins. The concert will take place in the Mainstage Theatre at the Ybor Campus of Hillsborough College (formerly HCC) at 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 14. These ongoing Sunday jazz shows are a co-production between HC Visual and Performing Arts Series and the Tampa Jazz Club.
Rollins came to prominence in the 1950s with outstanding works like “Tenor Madness,” timeless jazz standards such as “St. Thomas,” and his stellar efforts with Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and others. In 1961, after a two year hiatus where he spent over 15 hours a day practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge in New York, Rollins made a triumphant return with his album “The Bridge.” Following his comeback he was a ubiquitous presence on the jazz scene for decades, recording over 60 albums and headlining shows and festivals worldwide. Despite his retirement in 2014, he remains a forceful influence for all jazz musicians today.
For this show, tenor saxophonist Jack Wilkins will be joined by LaRue Nickelson on guitar, Per Danielsson on piano, Mark Neuenschwander on bass and Dave Hardman on drums.
Join us for a rousing homage to the man known as the “Saxophone Colossus,” Sonny Rollins, and a great afternoon of jazz.
