Greetings all-
Let's visit Shakespear Regional Park on the Northshore at the end of Whangaparoa Peninsula which is an Open Sanctuary for the protection of Native Birds, including Kiwi..and a fabulous selection of nature trails, a small waterfall, wide open spaces, for excellent scenery, pastureland, sheltered bays and a lookout with views second to none.
Close to Tiritiri Matangi Island Scientific Reserve, Shakespear Regional Park is close enough for many native birds, particularly tui, native pigeons, the kereru, bellbird, and as mentioned, the occasional Kiwi.
From our Meeting place Carpark at the Waterfall Gully Carpark, we enter the Bird sanctuary here through gates, and we follow the Heritage Trail , walking quietly here, we should see and hear the birds, and also magnificent very big and amazing old Puriri Trees..which we will learn something about along with orher trees here at these few pockets of regenerating smaller trees..
We then follow the farm tracks together to reach the beach at Te Haruhi Bay for lunch and relaxing.
Then circle back to the Water Gully Carpark on other easy going tracks, offering more scenic open sea views across Auckland and Harbour.
Ideally suited for mature people looking forward to slower paced walking and socializing together , this is a Nature Discovery Loop Bespoke Trail ..
About 3 plus hours of Adventure Walking, and extra time for stopping to rest, and take pictures.
Wear strong walking shoes and Warmer clothes for its not summer yet. Bring along everything you need to keep yourself fed and hydrated and carry a rain jacket and thermal based layers . Use a small backpack, and a hiking stick is helpful across the open farm tracks.
As well as the lookout views and Te Haruhi Bay, we will have time to see much more of this park, which I have a good knowledge about, so expect something different, particularly as we're inside a pest control gated entrance ..so a really good chance to photography native birds.
How to Get There- Shakespear Regional Park is approximately 50km or a 45 min drive from Downtown Auckland. Follow SH1 north to Silverdale offramp. Then turn Right after passing through Silverdale onto Whangaparoa Road .
Don't go into main Entrance at Shakespear Regional Park.
Go a bit further down road, to enter the Waterfall Gully Carpark on Right.
Look out for me wearing Bright Orange Top on Whangaparoa Road where the Toilets are Located.
No Dogs or Smokers or Vaping please. No rubbish bins are here. Take everything home.
I look forward to seeing you as we begin September .
