Improv Environment & Character with Steven Lyons
Sat 19 July 10am-1pm
Artworks Theatre, Waiheke
Are you tired of standing on stage, racking your brain for the next big idea? In this workshop, we'll prove that the secret to great improv isn't just witty dialogue, it's about creating a world we can see and feel. Scenes become effortless and dynamic when you lean on your character's natural instincts and the space around you.
We’ll take the stress out of your scene work by focusing on how to build a rich, grounded world. We'll explore exercises to build your confidence in committing physically to a space, discovering joyous and tangible details that give a scene life. Led by Steven Lyons (This Might Get Weird, The Dice Show), who trained in Chicago (Second City, ComedySportz), you’ll learn how to stop overthinking and start simply doing.
This workshop is for improvisers who want to build a more authentic connection to their scene work. Improv is best learned by doing, so come prepared to have fun, get silly, and celebrate the pure joy of making it all up on the spot.
Key Takeaways:
Let your characters do the talking: Create characters who know who they are and what they want.
Deepen Your Scenes: Learn to create a more believable world by investing in physical object work.
Think Less, Do More: Reduce the pressure of finding the "perfect" line by letting your body and your surroundings guide you.
Enhance Communication: Discover how to use physical offers to better support your scene partners and engage the audience.
Find the Fun: See how focusing on simple, physical details unlocks more creative freedom and joy in every scene.
This workshop requires performers to have a base of improv experience, but feedback will be tailored to your level. Class size is capped at 12. Grab your notebooks and stretch your brain muscles :)
