——ABOUT——
Voice for Environmental Destruction, but Criminalized by the Government? Is Environmental Justice Now a Crime?
In Southeast Asia, environmental activists and journalists work in harsh and dangerous conditions. They face threats of arrest, interrogation, prosecution, violent abuse, enforced disappearances, and even murder. These threats are part of a systematic crackdown launched by authorities and corporations to suppress dissent and control land and resources.
To address this, we have organized a summer series of events, inviting Southeast Asian environmental human rights defenders to share how they resist environmental destruction, human rights violations, and political persecution.

🔊 The Truth Fight of Independent Journalists from the Philippines and Vietnam
We focus on journalists reporting on environmental movements in the Philippines. The country has been ranked the deadliest in Asia for environmental human rights defenders, where activists and journalists face government lawsuits, enforced disappearances, and even extrajudicial killings. In this session, we invite independent Filipino journalists to share how they continue to speak the truth despite such a hostile environment. We will also be joined by the co-founder of a Vietnamese exile organization for a joint discussion.
👉Speaker: Filipino independent journalist & the Co-founder of Exiled Vietnamese Organization
👉Time: 23th July (Wed.) 19:00-21:00

🔊 Resistance of Indonesian Labor Unions, Indigenous Communities, and Environmental NGOs
Our attention turns to the environmental movement in Indonesia. A recent report by the Environmental Rights Foundation (ERF) reveals how Taiwanese nickel mining companies are destroying the local environment in Indonesia, harming the livelihoods of local residents, and exploiting Indonesian workers. Environmental rights activists protesting the nickel mining operations have been arrested and beaten by the police. In this session, with the assistance of the ERF, we are honored to invite Indonesian environmental activists and affected communities to discuss the struggles of Indonesia’s environmental movement.
👉Speaker: Indonesian environmental activists
👉Time: 6th August (Wed.) 19:00-21:00
👉Venue: Near Taipei Main Station (exact address will be provided in the registration confirmation email)
