Candlelight, Postcards, and the West Coast
Chia-yu Lin, Sung-wan, Huang, Ting-wen Chiang
After a decade apart, Joanna Chia-yu Lin, Sung-wan Huang, and Ting-wen Chiang reunite in the place where they first met, reflecting on how bodily and emotional displacements have reshaped their perception of “distance.” Having each developed their practice in different places, they now come together in a shared exploration of what exists “in-between”: between past and present, home and elsewhere, rootedness and migration.
Candlelight, Postcards, and the West Coast marks a moment of reunion where personal memory intertwines with the shifting realities of geography. Through photography, painting, text, sculpture, and mixed medium experimentation, the three artists explore the fragmented perceptions embedded in personal experience, seeking connection in what is often overlooked or ambiguous: entangled family ties across distance, shifting landscapes, the quiet persistence of plants and animals, or the unspoken stories carried by stones and highways. The exhibition traces these thresholds, inviting viewers to consider that “distance” is not merely a physical measurement, but something that also resides in memory, the senses, and the act of looking.
