This conference, designed for K-10 science educators, focuses on developing the skills of Working, Thinking and Questioning Scientifically, empowering teachers to navigate and implement the new science syllabuses with confidence.
It unites educators, curriculum developers, and industry experts to enhance students’ scientific skills collaboratively across Stages 1 to 5.
Gain insights on how to create a skills progression for students and walk away practical, hands-on activities, thoughtfully designed to align with the new NESA science syllabuses.
Date: Monday 23 June 2025

Opening: Nathan Hart is a Professor of Comparative Neurophysiology at Macquarie University, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Nathan leads the Neurobiology Lab and is renowned for his pioneering work in comparative sensory biology.
Keynote: Dr Phoebe Meagher, Wildlife Conservation Officer, Taronga Zoo. After joining Taronga as part of the Wildlife Hospital team in 2012, Phoebe is now based at the Institute of Science and Learning where she is responsible for conservation recovery programs and population management of Australian mammals and aquatic and marine mammals at Taronga, including legacy species such as platypus and marine turtles.
The Program
The Primary stream will feature a program of ‘round-robin’ style short workshops, showcasing a range of science practicals for primary stages, aligned to the new primary science and technology syllabus. Including:
🌱Making Terrariums: Learn how to teach Earth’s systems with Annie Martin (PLC Sydney).
🪃Investigating Sound with Wood: Explore Aboriginal perspectives with Grace McIntosh.
🌿Sensory Observations in Primary Science: Hands-on investigations with Lesley Gough (Western Sydney University).
🌠The Sky is the Window to Our Universe: Engaging astronomy activities with Fiona Grant (Central Coast Grammar School).
🌅Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives in STEM: Practical activities with Destiny Paris (CSIRO).
7-10 stream will feature workshops to keep science educators on track with the implementation of the new syllabus, prac demonstrations and essential resources. It will cover the following areas:
🧪 Practical Investigations to engage students in scientific thinking.
Dry lab demonstrations, simulations and experimentation to reinforce scientific concepts.
🔢Incorporating data science principles to teach students data analysis and interpretation skills; using data science techniques to solve real-world scientific problems.
💻Leveraging AI and integrating AI tools to enhance students’ understanding of scientific concepts in your classroom.
Mapping skills across stages and for Depth Studies and continuity of scientific skills as students advance through different year levels.
Browse newly released resources from Australian science education publishers, collaborate with fellow science teachers and get up to date with the latest strategies and recommendations from leaders in science education.
We’ll end the day with a compelling panel discussion around the New Science Curriculum Skills Continuum. Panelists: Shirley Casper (NESA), Josh Botto (Cranbrook School), Margaret Shepherd (ASTA), Sham Nair (NSW DoE), Anne Forbes (Macquarie University).
