About the event

Fruit Trees and California Native Plants: Landscaping Together
Learn how to landscape with fruit trees and native plants in this informative offering from Fruitstitute!

About this Event

As the saying goes - when the universe gives you lemons, you make lemonade! Well, the reality is that the universe did not create the lemons we know today as lemons...humans did. In fact, commercially cultivated varieties of fruit trees, like the ones found in the produce aisle of most grocery stores, do not grow from seed. They are grafted, which means they have been designed by humans for humans. Unlike native plants, they do not grow in the wild and will not thrive if left un-tended by our human hands. As a result, these trees are more resource intensive than any native plant. This has implications when it comes to growing native plant landscapes and supporting native habitats.

How do we make that proverbial lemonade and grow a landscape that is both ecologically supportive, low maintenance, water wise and literally fruitful?

In this class, Joanna, founder of Fruitstitute, a fruit tree care and education service for backyard growers, will discuss exactly that. She will cover what you need to know about your fruit trees’ needs in order to cultivate a fruitful long lived relationship with your tree. From there, the class will branch out to discuss considerations for growing fruit trees in native landscapes, such as where to plant what, watering considerations and other tips and solutions to ensure the success of all your plants and the habitat as a whole. A special offering not to be missed!

Fruitstitute is the only fruit tree care and education service for home orchards in Los Angeles county. Their team of fruit tree specialists provides seasonal fruit tree care from pruning, feeding, integrated pest management and more, to help clients maintain healthy and abundant fruit trees. Fruitstitute also teaches clients how to take care of their own trees, offering hands on one-on-one educational sessions and workshops.

Founded by local fruit tree specialist, Joanna Glovinsky, Fruitstitute’s mission is to teach people that all fruit trees need specialized care to grow great fruit.
